Ed Shuldham

JM Stratton & Co, East Farm, Codford, Wiltshire

  • Farm size: 1,800ha
  • Annual rainfall: 900mm
  • Soil type: Light to medium chalk with clay cap patches

Business development manager Ed Shuldham is focused on soil health, and making data-based decisions to improve it, using measures such as min-till, direct drilling and cover cropping, alongside straw chopping and digestate spreading.

Last year 364ha of the farm’s 1,800ha was put into Defra’s Sustainable Farming Incentive pilot to establish how it can work for the farm, as well as help shape the scheme.

A long-term goal for the business is to deliver landscape-scale environmental projects to take advantage of natural capital trading through schemes for biodiversity net gain, nutrient offsetting and carbon reduction.

Transition goals:

  • Help shape SFI through participation in pilot
  • Make more use of data
  • Take natural capital opportunities
