NFU MUTUAL AGENCIES ARE BUILT BY BUSINESS LEADERS LIKE YOU

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY AGENT?

NFU Mutual is an award-winning insurance and financial services business offering high-quality products and services to a range of customers. We are proud to have a network of more than 300 agencies across the UK that are run by self-employed Agents who enjoy a unique opportunity to build, lead and grow successful local businesses – typically in partnership with one or more other Agents.

As an Agent you won’t be employed by NFU Mutual but will have an agency agreement – a commercial contract – to sell NFU Mutual insurance products. With a high performing team, that could be anything from 4 to 30-strong, you'll provide advice and support to a variety of local customers, from farmers and businesses to homeowners and high net worth individuals.

And if, in addition to being an Agent of NFU Mutual, you are also a Farming Union Representative, you’ll also support local members by campaigning for change on their behalf.

YOU’LL RUN YOUR OWN BUSINESS

You’ll be leading and growing your own insurance sales business, upselling and introducing a wide range of insurance and financial products to local customers. You’ll need to be an ambitious leader, with an entrepreneurial approach and the strategic ability to grow a profitable business. You’ll also be a local figurehead at the heart of a rural community, so you’ll need a passion for helping people and forging strong relationships.

Our NFU Mutual Financial Advisers and Risk Management Services will work with customers to offer high level life pension, protection and investment planning services and valuable guidance on health and safety to complement your General Insurance products and generate new leads.

YOU’LL BE SELF-EMPLOYED

It’s up to you to work with your partners to build a modern, customer-focused business that’s structured for success. With typical renewal rates in excess of 95%, it gives you the opportunity to generate a healthy profit margin, with attractive drawing potential for you and any business partners. We’ll pay your agency a monthly commission based on your sales of General Insurance policies, Financial Services, National Intermediary Services and Risk Management Services. And because each agency in our network is different, we’ll set your commission rates based on your agency’s individual circumstances.

Our agency support teams will work with you to understand your business strategy and the plan that you and your partners have for your business, with a view to understanding the support that may be helpful to you to achieve it. They can also provide training, advice, support and access to services for you, your team and your business.

REPRESENTING THE FARMING UNION

Many Agents of NFU Mutual also carry out a separate role as a representative for the local farming union. Your farming union work will run alongside the NFU Mutual business, placing you at the heart of the local farming and business community. This will enable you to make meaningful, profitable connections with farmers, growers, and the rural community at large, with a focus on growing farming union membership alongside growing your agency.

The role of a Farming Union Representative and being an Agent are intrinsically linked. You’ll have the chance to identify and capitalise on opportunities for new business and introduce what the farming union and NFU Mutual has to offer to a wider audience. By developing these strong relationships, you’ll be representing rural people, sharing expertise, standing up for the countryside and playing a valuable part in sustaining the UK’s agricultural industry.

MEET SOME OF OUR AGENTS

Tom Murray

Job title:
Senior Agent (Yorkshire Central)
Responsibilities:
After college, I didn’t want to go to university, so I joined NFU Mutual in 2011. After working in an agency, I became one of their first trainee Agents, developing my skills on placements in different agencies. At my first agency in Skipton and now in Selby, NFU Mutual have always supported me. I’ve been on a variety of training programmes and now they’re backing my Executive MBA at Cranfield University, alongside my CII studies. And when I proposed a joint investment to restructure the Selby agency and increase new business by looking at sectors outside farming, they backed me all the way. I really enjoy creating plans, getting people behind them and being able to drive change quickly.

Sian Williams

Job title:
Agent (Essex South, Chelmsford)
Responsibilities:
I worked for a number of national brokers before I joined NFU Mutual. Being an Agent is a breath of fresh air – no more revolving managers, job insecurity or feeling I wasn’t achieving my full potential. One advantage of working with NFU Mutual is starting with an existing book of business. They also support us with systems, compliance and managing risk. But our strategy’s in our hands, so we decide how we want to grow. It’s not all farming, either – in fact, 52% of our business is non-farming. I deal with SMEs and mid-corporates and have the scope to write their entire portfolios. Friends joke that I do business in wellies, but sadly I haven't had to wear a pair of wellies for work!

Jonathan Hogg

Job title:
Agent Partner (Dingwall)
Responsibilities:
I started as a farmer and farm manager and still work on my uncle’s farm during lambing season. After working as a livestock and land inspector for the Scottish government, I heard about the NFU Mutual Agent role. I thought at first it wouldn’t be for me, because I had no sales or insurance experience. But in an agency like ours, my agricultural knowledge and customer relationship skills are vital – and with the right training, I soon picked up the insurance knowledge. I really enjoy working with different farming businesses. It’s about building strong customer relationships – getting under the skin of their businesses, treating them as you’d want to be treated and building their trust by giving them good, reliable advice.

Emily Mills

Job title:
Senior Agent (Tiverton)
Responsibilities:
Being a self-employed NFU Mutual Agent means you can make your own decisions. You have total flexibility to grow and develop your team and business in your own way, deciding what’s in the best interests of your business to deliver great client service. No two days are ever the same. For example, one day I can be talking to an MD of a multi-million-pound business and the next I can be walking around a dairy farm in my wellies. It makes it fun to come to work every day.
